ISTANBUL - Turkish Airlines, the country's flag carrier, sent an order to buy five model 777-300 Extended Range aircraft worth $1.36 billion from Boeing Co, the aerospace giant said in a statement on Wednesday.
This order marks Turkish Airlines', or THY, first purchase of new 777s directly from Boeing, the company said.
Â
Turkey’s flag carrier currently operates 65 Boeing planes, including next-generation 737s and leased 777-300ERs.
Â
THY, although coming under the spotlight after the fatal crash at Amsterdam's Schipol Airport, is still seen as one of the rising stars in global aviation.
Â
As profits among airline rivals fall due to waning demand, THY increased passenger numbers by 15.6 percent in 2008 to rank among the top three fastest growing European carriers according to figures from the Association of European Airlines.
