Turkey's oldest new mother ever went onto the record books yesterday, when 64 year old Memnune Tiryaki gave birth at Istanbul's German Hospital to a baby boy. Tiryaki, who became pregnant throught invitro fertilization which brought together a donor's egg with her husband's sperm, joins the ranks of Romanian Adriana Iliescu, who broke a world record for advanced age at motherhood when she gave birth at the age of 66.

Memnune Tiryaki had reportedly tried, without success, to become pregnant over the past 35 years. Her husband, 62 year old Omer Tiryaki, told reporters "When we saw in the first tests that she was actually pregnant, we couldn't believe it. Our relatives told us that it wasn't a real pregnancy, but we never gave up." Tiryaki's baby boy was born yesterday at a healthy weight of 2 kilos 735 grams, and a height of 48 centimeters. Said Omer Tiryaki "In the end, our baby has been born. I am retired, and so my wife and I will bring our baby up together."
