Turkey to try fifteen doctors over death of Ergenekon detainee

The Prosecutor’s Office in the northwestern province of Tekirdag demanded up to three years imprisonment for the doctors for negligence in their role in the case of Kuddusi Okkır, who died last July shortly after his release following nearly a year in custody.

 
Okkir, who was arrested under the controversial Ergenekon investigation, was diagnosed with cancer while in prison, but died four days after his release.

After his death, Okkir’s wife, Sabriye, accused doctors of negligence in his care, claiming the cancer spread to his brain from the lungs due to a delay diagnosis and treatment.

Okkir was claimed to be the "financial source" of the so-called Ergenekon organization.

His death sparked harsh criticism across the country since the lack of a long waited indictment hastened the death of a previously healthy man.
