Daily News with wires - Turkey is ready to resume mediating peace talks between Israel and Syria, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu told reporters Thursday at the United Nations.
The two countries held five indirect talks with Turkey s mediation last year, Davutoğlu recalled, adding that there is now a new government in Israel. Davutoğlu reiterated Turkey s position, saying, Turkey and the international community s position is clear. New Jewish settlements should not be opened. The only option is a two-state solution. We want everyone to contribute to this solution.
The Turkish foreign minister was chairing a meeting on Iraq at the U.N. headquarters on Thursday. Delivering a speech at the beginning of the meeting, Davutoğlu said Iraq has been on the U.N. Security Council s agenda for 20 years. Davutoğlu held a news conference prior to his departure from New York. When asked if Iraq's territorial integrity was under threat, Davutoğlu said Iraq was going through a transition period.
Meanwhile, Turkey has pledged to double the flow of water into the Euphrates River in Iraq over the summer by opening dam floodgates, Vice President Tareq al-Hashemi’s office said. "A message from the office of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan came this morning, regarding increasing Iraq's water share," Hashemi's office said. It said Ankara had already increased water flow to Iraq from 360 cubic meters per second to 515 cubic meters per second and would ramp that figure up to 715 during July, August and September.
