ANKARA - Turkey today takes over the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council from Russia for a term of one month.

"Turkey is determined to carry out an active presidency during its term of office," Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu said before leaving for the United States yesterday. "This is a very important and great responsibility. All the international issues will be followed under Turkey’s supervision as president. Many issues, including Iraq, will be discussed."

Stressing that the agenda of the Security Council will not only focus on issues concerning Turkey, Davutoğlu said the country would do its best in relation to all the developments in the world.

The situation in Afghanistan and Pakistan is expected to occupy the Security Council’s agenda during Turkey’s presidency. The Security Council recently extended its Cyprus peacekeeping mandate for another six months; Turkey voted against the resolution and opposed the council’s decision, claiming that it did not seek Turkish Cypriots’ consent and included the phrase "Republic of Cyprus" to refer to the Greek administration.

Turkey was elected as a temporary member of the UN Security Council starting January 1, 2009. It will remain in the post until the end of 2010. Britain, the United States, Russia, China and France are the permanent members of the council.

Davutoğlu said his talks with U.S will include regional issues.
