Turkey to construct second nuclear plant in Sinop

Turkey will construct its second nuclear power plant in the Black Sea city of Sinop, said Turkey's Energy Minister Hilmi Guler, the Anatolian Agency reported.

Energy Minister Hilmi Guler said that the plant would be built in the northern city of Sinop, and the tender would be held in 2008.

Guler said that the second nuclear plant would be in Inceburun hamlet of Sinop, and added that the type and details of the 2008 tender had not been shaped yet.

"The dimensions of the second nuclear power plant have not been determined yet, but it will not be smaller than the one to be constructed in Mersin's Akkuyu town (south of Turkey)," Guler said.

Six firms/consortia have got specifications for the tender for the 4,000-megawatt nuclear power plant in Akkuyu including Canadian AECL Atomic Energy of Canada Limited, Japanese Itochu Corporation, French Vinci Construction Grand Projects, French-Belgium Suez Tractebel, Russian Atostroyexport, South Korean KEPCO. The bid taking process for the tender will continue until Sept. 24, 2008.
