Turkey’s ruling AKP Ankara candidate Gokcek seems the winner

ANKARA - According to election results at 00:15 a.m. (2115 GMT), the ranking of the parties in the capital remains unchanged as Justice and Development Party, or AKP, gets the first rank. Main opposition Republican People’s Party, or CHP, is in the second rank while Nationalist Movement Party, or MHP, occupies the third rank. (UPDATED)

In the 2004 elections, AKP’s Melih Gokcek won the mayoralty seat of the metropolitan municipality, gaining 55 percent of votes. When compared to the 2004 elections, there appears to be a nearly 20 percentage point decline in support for Gokcek, since his vote rate was around 37.5 percent at 00:15 a.m.

 

Gokcek’s closest rival Murat Karayalcin closes the gap gaining 32 percent, while MHP’s Mansur Yavas got 27.5 percent of the vote with 75 percent of votes counted. According to these results, Gokcek seems to be the winner though his support has declined.Â
