ISTANBUL - The United States can use Turkey as a hub for air supply and cargo transportation to Iraq, Afghanistan and other countries in the region, the transport minister said Wednesday.

Binali Yıldırım said the United States was currently basing its transportation to the region over the German city of Frankfurt, but the country was facing difficulties because of heavy traffic."

I told my U.S. counterpart that this transportation process can be carried out over Turkey," he said.

Yıldırım said cooperation opportunities in the aviation sector and high-speed train projects were on the agenda of his meeting with U.S. Secretary for Transportation Ray LaHood.

Yıldırım also said that Turkish State Railways and General Electric would jointly manufacture locomotives in the central Anatolian province of Eskişehir in the near future.

"In addition to Turkey's strategic partnership with the United States in fields of defense and security, we would like to improve relations in transportation, trade, tourism and information technology as well. We believe there is a potential to do that," Yıldırım said.

Upon completing his talks, Yıldırım departed from Washington, D.C.

Yıldırım also delivered a speech at luncheon of the 28th annual conference of the American-Turkish Council in Washington. Yıldırım reminded that U.S. President Barack Obama paid his first overseas visit to Turkey and said it was a good sign. "Turkey and the United States have a common vision based on strategic partnership," he said.

In his speech, Transportation Minister Binali Yıldırım said they expected more U.S. businessmen to invest in Turkey. Yıldırım also had a meeting with U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood on Tuesday.

The annual conference on U.S.-Turkish relations is a forum for government and military officials, business leaders and academics.

Upon completing his talks, Yıldırım departed from Washington, D.C.
