Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan read the 60th government program yesterday at the general assembly of the TBMM (Grand National Assembly of Turkey), describing the program’s general approach with an English term. “Our main goal is to take Turkey into a ‘take-off’ phase, enabling a more secure speed and height,” he said.

Emphasising the words, ‘conciliation’ and ‘development’ four times throughout his speech, Mr. Erdoğan said that his government would embrace all sections of society. Some of the highlights of the Prime Minister’s speech included:
Societal Agreement: The new constitution will be composed of a societal agreement. It will be prepared in cooperation with all sections of society. As the Republic of Turkey approaches its first century, our country deserves a constitution composed of civil reconciliation, he said.

Subtle reference to the turban: It will be made possible for basic rights and freedoms that will be under constitutional and legal protection, to be effectively carried out and become a part of our political culture, he said.
Formula for religious ‘Imam Hatip’ schools?: Despite our efforts and improvements against the background of the previous political style and the out-dated arguments that still remained from it, the current structure of vocational education is a far cry from the needs of the market. We are determined to surpass this problem through conciliation. We have laid the foundations for a more flexible system in which it is the program of study rather than the type of school that is of importance, and which allows for easy transfers from one program to another. This system will be put into practice as of the next academic term, he said.
