The 29-year-old suspect, identified as Ali Kur, was arrested on a German warrant Tuesday night at the home of a relative in the southern coastal Aegean town of Didim, the statement said. Â

The girl was of Turkish heritage and lived in the same building as Kur in Germany. Two days after her Jan. 12 disappearance, her naked body was found near a lake outside of the city of Paderborn.

German police have said she was sexually abused, and that the suspect's business card was found near her body. German police later said DNA found in the suspect’s home matched evidence from the crime scene.

The suspect’s father-in-law told Dogan News Agency (DHA) on Wednesday that the suspect surrendered quietly to police when they arrived to arrest him. Kadir Ayaz told the news agency that the surrender of his son-in-law to police "was a matter of honor for me, I can never accept what he has done".Â

German officials have said Kur was not expected to be extradited because Turkey, like many other countries including Germany itself, has laws allowing its citizens to be tried at home even for crimes committed abroad.
