Turkey had several advantages in the area of energy, he told at a group meeting of his Justice and Development Party (AKP).

"Turkey launched and completed many important investments and projects in order to provide its own energy resources and become a global actor," he said.

"We have started initiatives to meet the energy needs of Turkey in the coming period," Erdogan said, adding the government has been working hard to make Turkey an energy corridor.

Turkey would construct its second nuclear power plant in the Black Sea city of Sinop, Turkey's Energy Minister Hilmi Guler said last week.

The dimensions of the nuclear power plant in Sinop have not been determined yet, but it would not be smaller than the one to be constructed in Mersin's Akkuyu town (south of Turkey), Guler said.

Six firms/consortia have got specifications for the tender for the 4,000-megawatt nuclear power plant in Akkuyu including Canadian AECL Atomic Energy of Canada Limited, Japanese Itochu Corporation, French Vinci Construction Grand Projects, French-Belgium Suez Tractebel, Russian Atostroyexport, South Korean KEPCO. The bid taking process for the tender will continue until Sept. 24, 2008.
