AMSTERDAM - Turkish pianist and singer Karsu Dönmez, who has made her name heard in the Netherlands, will perform for the second time at Carnegie Hall, one of the world’s leading concert halls in New York, next month.

Dönmez, 18, will take the stage April 27 as part of cultural events in celebration of the 400th anniversary of relations between the Netherlands and New York. Accompanied by a group of Dutch artists, 120-person New York Pops Orchestra and jazz pianist Jonathan Batiste, Dönmez will perform two English songs at the concert.

Dönmez had earlier drawn Batiste’s attention at one of his concerts organized for discovering young talent in the country. She first took the stage at the Carnegie Hall in September 2007. With the contributions of the U.S. Consulate General in Amsterdam, Dönmez competed in the World Scholar Athlete Games in the United States in 2006 to represent the Netherlands and had a chance to perform in the concert at the closing ceremonies. Learning piano at the age of 7, Dönmez is known for her jazz songs in Turkish and English as well as her piano performance. She attended almost all jazz events in the country for the last year.

Hudson Year

As part of the 400th anniversary of relations between the Netherlands and New York, this year has been declared the "Hudson Year" and cultural events will be held throughout the year. During a visit in 1609, Dutch explorer Henry Hudson established a claim on the territory and sparked great interest in the Netherlands in agriculture and fur trading in upstate New York, which contained the largest colony of the Netherlands in the United States until being seized by England in 1674.
