ISTANBUL - A hat trick by attacking midfielder Tuncay Şanlı powered Turkey to a 4-2 comeback win over Austria in a friendly match Wednesday night.
It was more like a home game for Turkey, as over 15,000 of the total 23,100 spectators in the stadium were Turkish supporters. Turkey coach Fatih Terim was happy with the victory. "Winning is important in every game, even in friendlies," he said. "I congratulate my players for taking the game serious."
Austria coach Karel Brückner congratulated the Turkish team, which he said, "got a well-deserved victory." Andreas Hoelzl scored both goals for the host team, which looked good for much of the first half before gradually losing control of the game to the EURO 2008 semifinalist.
Hoelzl headed in his first goal in the 28th minute after Austria worked the ball forward from deep inside its own half. But Turkey leveled when Valencia midfielder Mehmet Aurelio collected a pass and beat Austria goalkeeper Michael Gspurning from 10 meters in the 37th, and Middlesbrough star Tuncay made it 2-1 just four minutes later. Tuncay extended Turkey's lead in the 47th, lifting the ball over Gspurning.
Hoelzl pulled a goal back for Austria in the 53rd minute with a powerful shot into the top corner, but Tuncay put the result beyond doubt with a lob eight minutes later.
Both teams’ players supported UEFA’s efforts against racism in football, carrying banners that read, "show racism the red card," during the opening ceremony.
