A recent trial which has hit the 7th High Criminal Court in Ankara alleges that a number of Turkish Standards Institution(TSE) staff has deliberately scheduled a visit to Tokat to coincide with a family meeting.According to the allegations, a prospective panel entitled “Protection and Training of the Customer” was scheduled between the dates February 21-22 to make it easier for certain members of the staff to attend a family wedding while in town in Tokat. Following a notification, members of the Court of Auditors prepared a report and presented it to the office of the director of public prosecutions. The legal battle was then carried to the High Criminal Court once the investigation had been completed. Members of TSE staff Elbeyi Uçan and Mehmet Altınparmak are not being tried on grounds of misappropriation and abuse of authority. Uçan could face 5-12 years while Altınparmak could face from three months to 3 years in prison. Other members of the staff which partook in the incident are now being investigated. The report which initiated the case also state that at least five members of the staff are ‘relatives’. It is alleged that by arranging the panel date to fall on to the family wedding, they also did not have to take a leave or spend money out of their pockets for travelling expenses. It is also laid down in the allegation file that the group stayed in Grand Tokat Hotel during their excursion, enjoying drinks, food and pleasures of the sauna – billIng it all to the Institution.
