ISTANBUL - Istanbul’s metrobus service was ramped up to help ease traffic congestion during a big match yesterday.
With Turkey’s biggest football teams,
Galatasaray and
Fenerbahçe, set to face off at Ali Sami Yen Stadium in the Mecidiyeköy district at the heart of the European side of the city, the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality took precautions by adding 50 vehicles to the metrobus line.
The metrobus runs from Avcılar, on the European side, to Söğütlüçeşme, on the Asian side, traveling in its own lane, separate from the rest of the traffic.
According to the municipality announcement, adding extra vehicles to the 40.5-kilometer line would help people travel faster and more easily. Normally there are 20 hybrid metrobus vehicles running between the city’s Asian and European sides. The 50 extra buses offered an alternative to getting stuck in the sports-related traffic on regular buses and in private cars.
