FETHİYE - Twenty-one years ago, Karin and Ruud Maas sailed away from the Netherlands on a world tour, but their trip came to an early end when they arrived in Fethiye and decided to settle there.
The couple had previously cruised various Turkish coves, spending time in the ports of Antalya, Bodrum, Kaş, Kuşadası and Marmaris, but fell in love with Fethiye. They have now been living in the Mediterranean town for four years, their boat, "Makke Beer," docked at the Ece Marina.
Karin, 68, and Ruud, 67, have learned Turkish and said, "We love Turkey so much," in their adopted language, adding that people like the natives of Fethiye cannot be found anywhere else in the world. "Our goal was to complete [our world tour] and then return home safe and sound. But upon our arrival in Fethiye, we completely postponed our tour. We loved Fethiye so much. My husband and I couldn’t leave ," said Karin.
