ANTALYA - Russian and Kenyan athletes dominated the fourth Runtalya race, an annual marathon held yesterday in the western city of Antalya.
Kenyan runner John Musile Kioko won the men’s marathon in 2 hours, 17 minutes 57 seconds, while runner-up Roman Efimov, from Russia, trailed 24 seconds behind. Ethiopian Tesfaye Bogale Reta came in third. Nadezda Semiletova of Russia won the women’s race in 2:44:15, ahead of Kenyan runners Rose Chesire and Salome Jerono Biwot.
Prominent Turks
Turkish athletes managed to advance to the podium for the first time, as both men and women runners placed in the top three in the half-marathon and 10K competitions.
But 69-year-old Sigrid Eichner stole the show, running in her 1,379th career marathon, the most ever by a woman.
Speaking after the race, Organization Director Recep Yavuz underscored the importance of Runtalya to the town. "With its young and dynamic population, Antalya and Turkey need such organizations," he said. Yavuz said that 2,700 runners participated the competitive races, while 3,500 people took part in the "fun run."
