ANKARA - More than 100,000 individuals or institutions have forgotten thousands of liras in bank accounts, figures show. The exact number of "forgotten accounts" at 20 banks stands at 103,268 and these include accounts of institutions such as the Fenerbahçe Sports Club, the Treasury, the Red Crescent and the Istanbul and İzmir govenorships.
İşbank tops the list of banks that have the most forgotten accounts. More than 48,000 accounts at the bank wait for prescription, when all the money in accounts will be transferred to the Savings Deposit Insurance Fund, or TMSF. With nearly 24,000 accounts, Ziraat Bank ranks as the second, followed by Halkbank with nearly 15,000 accounts.
The number of state institutions that have forgotten their money in banks is staggering and the long list includes the Health Ministry, state hospitals in three provinces, the Supreme Board of Radio and Television and Eximbank. The Treasury’s account in Ziraat Bank’s Yenişehir branch has been "forgotten" for a decade. The Welfare Party, which was closed down by the Constitutional Court in 1998, also has an account at Vakıfbank. Other political parties that have forgotten their bank accounts include the Republican People’s Party, Democratic Society Party and Democratic Left Party.
According to the Banking Law, prescription time for an account is 10 years. Banks have to put up lists of forgotten accounts and if an account’s owner does not show up in three months, the money is transferred to the Savings Deposit Insurance Fund.
