ISTANBUL - Istanbul’s traffic is famous for its troubles and drivers. Over the last week there were 23,504 drivers fined during traffic controls in the city. Between Dec. 29 and Jan. 4, traffic wardens stopped 28,548 vehicles, according to the Istanbul Police Department.
Illegal parking brought in the most fines with 5,572 citations, while 53 were for illegal transportation, 5,121 for breached red lights, 146 for drunk driving, 123 were fined because of tinted windows, 2,354 violated the security lane, 24 for overloading vehicles and the rest were fined for various other traffic violations. Motorcycle drivers were also fined. Of 109 drivers, 32 were driving without a license, nine did not have their driver’s license with them and 34 were fined for not wearing a helmet.
During the same time period, taxis were also stopped and 256 drivers were fined for violations, such as using the tram road and not taking customers. During the week, there were accidents that resulted in two deaths.
