NEW YORK - Thousands of people gathered in New York’s Central Park on Saturday for the "Istanbulive: The Sounds and Colors of Turkey" concert, which featured well-known Turkish musicians.

More than 5,000 people attended the event to watch famous Turkish band Mazhar Fuat Özkan, or MFÖ, Sertab Erener & Demir Demirkan, Hüsnü Şenlendirici, New York Gypsy All-Stars, young musician Emre Yılmaz, Greek clarinetist Vassilis Saleas, American band Brooklyn Funk Essentials and Christiane Karam. The Turkish Culture and Tourism Ministry was the main sponsor.

The concertgoers were mainly Turks living in New York and New Jersey. Following the performances by New York Gypsy All-Stars, Yılmaz, Şenlendirici, Saleas, Karam and Brooklyn Funk Essentials, Erener and Demirkan took the stage and performed songs from their joint album "Suya Boyanmış" (Painted on Water). MFÖ performed last.

Speaking to the press, group member Mazhar Alanson said it was their first concert in Central Park. "In fact, it doesn’t matter for us if we perform in Şanlıurfa [a southeastern Turkish city] or Central Park. Bu you cannot perform in a place like Central Park at any time. The audience was great here; we felt like we were in Turkey." Demirkan, who took the stage with Erener, said they felt the audience’s positive energy and that it was a wonderful day. He said "Painted on Water," his joint project with Erener, was a brand new one. "This English album was released in the U.S. first and will be released in Turkey in July."

Erener said they would travel the world as part of their project.
