The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate in Istanbul's Fener district yesterday celebrated the baptism of Jesus Christ in the Jordan River, with Greek Patriarch Bartholomeus leaving the Patriarchate's grounds to throw a cross into Istanbul's Golden Horn.
The annual event, which followed a five hour special mass, involved the throwing and retrieving of an ornate cross from the Golden Horn by one of the many youths eager to win the honor. This year's cross-retriever was 30 year old George Goutzioudis from Thessaloniki, Greece. Goutzioudis fought off 7 other competitors in the watery challenge, and was awarded a golden cross necklace by Patriarch Bartholomeus after the contest.
