ISTANBUL - Istanbul’s historic structures are on display in 3-D at the Istanbul Crystals Museum. The museum is the world’s first and only crystal museum and displays 3-D versions of 16 historic structures located in Istanbul.
Istanbul Crystals was established by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Culture A.Ş. in Miniaturk, which is the world’s largest miniature park
Among the 3-D structures displayed in the museum are Galata Tower, Sultanahmet Mosque, Fatih Mosque, Haydarpaşa Train Station, the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality building, Istanbul University, Maiden’s Tower, St. Antuan Church, Topkapı Palace, Eyüp Sultan Mosque and Rumeli Fortress.
The world’s largest glass, in which the visuals of structures are engraved via laser technology, is homogeneous and is 24 percent crystal. The thicker the glass, the easier the figures are seen.
3-D images
According to information by Murat Erel, who prepared the works, during the preparation of the crystals the product was first modeled and then turned into point clouds, which is a large number of points used in groups to create a 3-D image. Seven to 10 million points were used in each of the historic models. The quality of the image is based on the number of points used to create an image and the diameter of the point created by the laser. The greater number of points in an image reflects an increase in the model’s detail. To finish the process, photos of each structure were taken from eight different angles, and the works were completed in four months.
The figures are displayed in a dim environment under colorful LED lights to provide better sight. The lights’ colors change every five minutes.
Eserli said the most difficult structure was the Sultanahmet Mosque.
