The Herald Tribune, one of the world's most prestigious newspapers, held the first Fashion and Luxury Consumption Conference 6 years ago in Paris, and has decided to hold it this year in Istanbul.

Michael Oreskes, the newspaper's publication director, speaks about the upcoming December 7-8 conference, noting that he has heard much about Istanbul's growth and development, and that he is anxious to come and see it for himself. Says Oreskes: "We hear constantly about Turkey's phenomenal development and growth, we are following these things. Our newspaper's Fashion Editor, Suzy Menkes, is really an expert on these things, and advised that we hold this year's conference in Istanbul. Istanbul has become a very exciting address for us."

Its creativity is attractive: Oreskes notes that the creativity and design seen in Turkey over recent years has drawn attention, and that these developments are worth viewing for the rest of the world. He says "Turkey has also attracted a lot of investment. The conference planners and participants will come and see Turkey. We hope to learn a lot about you. I personally am very excited to come to Istanbul. This will be my first visit."

After Dubai: Oreskes explains that, on a global level, design and luxury goods consumption are becoming more important, and that the Herald Tribune is starting to attach more importance to these subjects: "Throughout the world, and as we globalize, fashion and luxury keep rising in terms of importance. We wanted to carry these conferences, which we have been holding for 6 years now, outside the classic fashion capitals of the world. We wanted to draw peoples' attention to interesting new addresses. Last year we held this conference in Dubai, this year in Istanbul. We want to focus on different, exciting and dynamic cities. From this perspective, we believe Istanbul will be truly interesting for our conference participants. Dubai is a place which is just exploding in terms of growth. Istanbul is like that too. Next year we want to hold the conference in another city which is on the rise: Moscow.

Meeting place: Oreskes notes that Turkey is a bridge between the East and the West, and that with its positioning in the world, it brings together very different people, companies, and investors. He adds: "At Herald Tribune, we are following Istanbul closely; there is a lot of news that comes out of Istanbul. We are also active in Istanbul. We watch and wait from western Europe, talking about the future that Turkey and the EU will build together."
Fashion's way of expressing itself

Michael Oreskes talks about the increasing interest by people all over the world in fashion, design, and luxury goods: "Fashion is an art. It is a form of expression. It is a way of explaining yourself and your life style. We may only live in this world, but by turning fashion and design into an art, we can exclaim to others that we are here. All over the world, both fashion and design have become more desirable, and more obtainable for many people."

450 people from 35 countries to attend the "Luxury Summit"

There are many luxury brands that will be participating in this year's conference in Istanbul. The CEO of Cartier International, Bernard Fornas, the CEO of PPR (Pinault-Printemps-Redoute), Francois-Henri Pinault, Aeffe Group President Massimo Ferretti, Ermenegildo Zegna CEO Ermenegildo Zegna, Charme Group Director Matteo Cordero di Montezemolo, and Aquascutum President Kim Winser are just a few of the top luxury brand names to be attending this year's conference. From Turkey, famous designers Rifat Ozbek and Huseyin Caglayan, as well as Beymen founder Cem Boyner will also be speaking at the conference. A total of 450 people from 35 countries all over the world will be in attendance.

Fransyz moda ve lüks sanayii 31.4 milyar Euro

Fashion and luxury goods play an inmportant part in the French economy's export market, with a total annual turnover of 31.4 billion Euro. This sector, which features names like Yves Saint Laurent, Vuitton, Chanel, Baccarat, Hermes, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Dior and Cartier, includes such arenas as haute couture, jewelry, leather, perfume, and cosmetics. There are at least 220 thousand employees working in this sector.
Not just expensive, but aimed at spoiling the individual customer

Burc Cemiloglu, the CEO of Unitim Holding, the company that brought the British luxury chain Harvey Nichols to Turkey, said this about the conference which they are helping sponsor: "Luxury does not only mean expensive. Luxury means aesthetics, a difference, a spoiling of the individual customer, and it includes a special stance and attitude. This is what we are trying to achieve with Harvey Nichols. There will be an enormous amount of information that comes out of having so many important labels attending this conference. This is why it will be such an important conference. And thus why we wanted to be a sponsor for the conference."
