ANKARA - Audiences will fall under the sway of the magical rhythms of tango as a group of artists takes the stage, accompanied by a traditional instrument, the bandone?n, for a performance in Ankara tomorrow.
During the concert, "Bozok Quartet and Piazzolla," works by the Argentinean tango master Astor Piazzolla will be performed. Musician Tolga Salman will play the bandone?n, an instrument invented in the 1840s and belonging to the concertina family.
The quartet actually comprises five musicians this time around: Tayfun Bozok, the head violinist of the Ankara State Opera and Ballet; Derya Bozok, a violinist with the Presidential Orchestra; alto player Selim Öğüt; cellist Köklü Yiğşt Tan; and pianist Orçun Orçunsel.
The concert will be hosted by the State Painting and Sculpture Museum and will start at 8 p.m. on Tuesday.
Who was Piazzolla?
Astor Piazzolla was an Argentinean tango composer and bandone?n player who revolutionized the traditional tango into a new style termed "nuevo tango" that incorporated elements from jazz and classical music. An excellent musician, he regularly performed his own compositions with different ensembles.
Piazzolla's "nuevo tango" was notable for its use of extended harmonies and dissonance, its use of counterpoint and its ventures into extended compositional forms. As Argentinean psychoanalyst Carlos Kuri has noted, Piazzolla's fusion of tango with a wide range of other recognizable Western musical elements was so successful that it produced a new individual style transcending these influences.
