The historic opera building, one of the artistic symbols of Ankara, opened April 2,1948. The building, which is still the only opera house in the capital, was established during the first years of the Republic as an exhibition house. The building was later turned into an opera house.
The building plan was prepared in 1931 as part of an international competition. Architect Şevki Balmumcu’s project won the competition. The aim of the construction was to show the developments in the country to the public. The exhibition house was designed in a style called the "First International Movement."
The exhibition house was turned into an opera house in 1946 by a decision of the National Education Ministry. A plan was prepared by famous German architect Paul Bonatz to transform the building into an opera house. The structure was redesigned in another style called the "Second National Movement."
