ANKARA - A question on an occupational test for prospective gendarmerie and police officers asked, "Which is accepted as a behavior peculiar to women?" The right answer was "talkative."
Those who answered "smart-aleck," "repressive," "logical thinking" or "self belief" failed to give the correct answer, according to a test administered by Açık Öğretim, the educational body in charge of distance education. Another question attempted to test the participants’ knowledge on insults. It asked, "If one tells a married man he is being cheated on, what kind of crime is committed against his wife?"
The choices included "swearing," "insulting in one’s presence," "insulting not in one’s presence" and, lastly, "indirect insulting," which was the right answer. While it was not clear why such an example was picked to test participants’ knowledge, its use ran counter to Education Minister Nimet Çubukçu’s statement upon taking office in early May that she would fight gender stereotyping and prejudices.
