ISTANBUL - Turkish Cypriot President Mehmet Ali Talat will meet U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton next week to discuss reunification talks regarding the Mediterranean island, a source in Talat's office said Friday.

Talat will set off for the United States on Tuesday and meet Clinton in Washington on Wednesday, the source told the AFP on condition of anonymity. The leader of the northern part of the island "will convey to the United States the views of the Turkish Cypriot side and urge Washington to maintain its interest in the process,"the source said.

Meanwhile, Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot leaders met Friday in a series of negotiations to end the division of the eastern Mediterranean island. Talat has been holding UN-mediated peace negotiations with Greek Cypriot President Demetris Christofias since September, but there has been little tangible sign of progress.

It was the 25th meeting for Talat and Christofias in their talks that they launched last September.

The two leaders discussed issues regarding the European Union in today's meeting and they were set to open talks on economic issues next. Talat and Christofias have earlier completed the first round talks on "administration and share of power" and "properties."

"Christofias and I have agreed on confidence-building measures, which will facilitate mutual transition of ambulances," Talat told reporters after the meeting. Talat said that the measures also envision preservation of cultural heritage and water saving project.
