ISTANBUL - T-shirts, home decorations, cosmetics, vegetables go on sale for the last time Tuesday at Salı pazarı (Tuesday bazaar) in its traditional location, Istanbul’s Kadıköy district. While the new location is ready to host hundreds of customers, the market’s present area will be turned into a shopping complex.
Stalls were set up for the last time Tuesday, at the traditional location of the long time symbol of Istanbul’s Kadıköy district, Salı pazarı (Tuesday bazaar). Sellers, who had everything from t-shirts to home decorations, cosmetics to vegetables and an array of other products at their stands, will in future peddle their wares in the Fikirtepe neighborhood. The new location, a few kilometers from Kadıköy, is ready to host the hundreds of customers drawn by the Salı pazarı vendors.
Although most of the vendors believe the market will not draw as many people as before once the location has changed, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, or İBB, officials claimed that the market in Kadiköy was blocking traffic. The market, which is close to the D-100 highway, will open Dec. 23.
Meanwhile, the market’s present location, Kuşdili Meadow, will be reconstructed to create the "Kuşdili Pazar Alışveriş ve Eğlence Merkezi," which will be a market and entertainment complex. Once construction is finished, the symbolic Salı pazarı will move into the complex.
The new location, which is 40,000 meters square, will have a parking lot and a big square in the middle for shoppers to relax. The square has been designed with 20 fountains. The market, that will have an office for the Sellers Association, lunch corners and municipal police offices, will have enough space for 4,000 stands. Two steel bridges have been built for to cross the Kurbağalıdere creek.
The market place has 4,000 square meters of green open space and a path is planned for cyclists and joggers.
A detailed market place to be built
The well-known site of the Salı pazarı, an area for which the municipality invited bids for the construction of a business center approximately two years ago, will be turned into an expanded complex.
The Taşyapı Construction Company won the bid with their "Build-Operate-Transfer" system, whereby the company will build the project and operate it for 30 years. The project, which is expected to cost around $50 million, is designed by the architect Hakan Kıran. The bid also covered landscaping proposals and parking space.
The complex to host the Salı pazarı once it is completed will not ruin the atmosphere of the market. The stands will be made of wood and they will look like the old ones with a new design.
The market will be 22,000 square meters. There will also be restaurants, movie theaters, theater halls, an amusement park for children and a sports complex inside the "Kuşdili Pazar Alışveriş ve Eğlence Merkezi." The food court and shopping area will be roofed with a huge tent that looks like a dome. During summer, the roof will be moved and the complex will become an open-air area. A 700 meter tower rising from the middle of the dome will boast a restaurant.
To tackle the traffic problem, roads will be extended, said an official from the company.
