ISTANBUL - The arrival of Swine flu, or the H1N1 virus, in Turkey is imminent, according to the general secretary of the Istanbul Medical Chamber. Dr. Huseyin Demirdizen announced yesterday that it was only a matter of time before the virus was present in the country.

He said that while the main source for swine flu was pigs, the virus itself was comprised of both animal and human genetics, which meant it could spread between humans.

"The virus has hit 24 countries across the world, we can not close our country to the world, therefore we need to focus on how long we can keep the virus out," Demirdizen said in Istanbul yesterday. Also speaking at the press conference, Professor Hüseyin Yilmaz from the Istanbul University Veterinary Faculty of Virology said even if the virus did not reach Turkey in the coming months, it could still come in the form of a "second wave" in the fall.
