ISTANBUL - Beşiktaş, Galatasaray and Trabzonspor all turned the 18th week of the Turkcell Super League into something of a goal fest.
Trabzonspor was the happiest team of the week, as it enjoyed a 2-0 win over fairly tough Ankaraspor on Saturday, equaling points with leader Sivasspor. Earlier that day, Sivasspor was held to a goalless draw by Kayserispor and Trabzon made the most of that result.
Gökhan Ünal, who was the league’s top goal scorer in 2005-2006 season, justified Trabzon spending 6 million euros on him with his stunning goal in the ninth minute. Standing on the left corner of the box, Ünal gave an unexpected spin to the ball, which curled behind goalkeeper Stefan Senecky.
The Slovakian goalkeeper was on the conceding side of another classy goal, when striker Umut Bulut lobbed the ball over him in the 74th minute to take his team out of Ankaraspor’s reach.
Galatasaray enjoyed the help of two classy forwards, as Milan Baros and Shabani Nonda both scored goals against lowly Denizlispor. Especially, Nonda’s second goal, which came from the Congolese’s smooth touch to a side pass outside the penalty area, completely stunned the Roosters’ defense and goalkeepers.
Tello’s scorcher
On Sunday,
Beşiktaş beat Antalyaspor again, which was the fourth time the Black Eagles beat the Southerners for the fourth time this year. A swerving shot from Chilean left winger Rodrigo Tello, with a little help by a late response by goalkeeper Ömer Çatkıç won the game for Beşiktaş, who managed to climb to the fifth spot and closer to the leaders.
Fenerbahçe’s star Alex de Souza scored a stunning goal against Gaziantepspor as well, hitting the top of the net with a hard shot inside the box, but his effort was not translated into points for his side. Alex’s 84th-minute goal was only good for canceling a goal of Erman Özgür’s two minutes before him. Two draws in two weeks also marked back-to-back slumps for Fenerbahçe, the first time since early October.
Domestic football action continues tonight with the Fortis Turkish Cup quarterfinal second leg clash between Sivasspor and Galatasaray, which will be the third time the two teams have clashed in the last 10 days. League leader Sivas proved to be a tough force in those games, winning the Turkcell Super League game 2-0 at home, and getting a valuable 1-1 draw in the cup game. Sivas will try to hold on to that advantage against Galatasaray tonight.
