ANKARA - Violence in schools is not limited to altercations among students alone but extends to teachers, too, according to a survey by a teachers’ union.
Türk Eğitim-Şen conducted a survey among 1,010 teachers around Turkey titled "Violence in schools from the eyes of teachers." The question, "Is there a student who has inflicted/inflicts violence in your school," was answered "yes" by 74.9 percent of teachers.
Twenty-three percent of respondents said they had been exposed to violence or abuse by their own students. Out of these teachers, 65.1 percent were subjected to verbal abuse, 16.9 to psychological abuse, 14.4 to physical violence and 3.6 to sexual abuse. According to 47.8 percent of the teachers, violence is common among students. Some 33.6 percent of respondents pointed to family and friends as the main causes behind students’ violent behavior. Other opinions on the reason behind violent behavior include parental neglect with 31.7 percent; movies with mafia, action or horror themes with 16.8 percent; parents’ divorce with 8.7 percent; and computer games with 4.9 percent.
The survey showed 85 percent of the teachers agreed that students were prone to inflicting damage using their fists and head-butting. Forty-three percent of the respondents said students brought sharp objects like knives, razors and butterfly knives to school.
