Denying rumors the pier listed because it lacked maintenance, the chairman of Istanbul Ferries, or İDO, Ahmet Paksoy, said the pier was last renovated in March 2006. Ferries that had been operating under City Lines were transferred to İDO in 2005, after which Paksoy said they began inspecting the underwater condition of all the piers.
"All of the piers were overhauled within the last four years. We also checked the ferries. YTL 500 million was spent on maintenance work," Paksoy said, adding inspections are conducted once every six months. Paksoy said there had been no corrosion of the Karaköy pier. "Our job is to find out why the pier listed, with the help of the ship engineers and relevant authorities, so results can guide us in future planning."
A new pier in Karaköy will be opened in one month’s time, Paksoy said. Responding to rumors that YTL 1 million was kept at the cashier of the pier, Paksoy said most people who used to take ferries from Karaköy each day used an akbil, nearly 6,000 people used tokens, and that money from the cashier was taken to the bank at midday every day. "There was YTL 25,000 at the cashier at the most," Paksoy said.
