Spanish artist in Istanbul for 2010

ISTANBUL - As part of a project titled "Living and Working in Istanbul," prominent Spanish contemporary artist Antoni Muntadas has signed up to work with the Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture Agency.
Muntadas is one of seven artists to visit Istanbul as part of the project to improve possibilities in the city for artists to create more products. He will hold workshops at the Istanbul 2010 Art Production Center in Kadırga.Â
Muntadas will carry out work on how Istanbul is being reconstructed via the media every day. During this process he will work with young artists and share his experiences in the field of contemporary art.
ECOC Visual Arts Director Beral Madra said that following Remo Salvadori, Muntadas was the second artist hosted by the agency as part of "Living and Working in Istanbul."
Muntadas said he has worked in many cities in the past. "The most important thing to me is to learn the facts and discover complicated sides of the cities where I go. Istanbul is one that inspires all artists. As a result of my research, I will share my work featuring Istanbul with the people of the city."
Muntadas has lived and worked in New York since 1971. He has received several prizes and grants including from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Rockefeller foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts, Arts Electronica in Linz/Austria, Laser d'Or in Locarno, Switzerland and the Premi Nacional d'Arts Plastiques de la Generalitat de Catalunya.
His work addresses social, political and communications issues, the relationship between public and private space within social frameworks, and investigations of channels of information and the ways they may be used to censor central information. He works in different media such as photography, video, publications, Internet and multi-media installations.
Spanish King Juan Carlos I will present him an important award in the field of contemporary art, the Velazquez Award, this month.
