LOS ANGELES - The British teenage star of Oscar-tipped "Slumdog Millionaire," Dev Patel, is to join the cast of the next project by Hollywood director M. Night Shyamalan, the film industry press said Monday.

Patel, 18, will take a part in "The Last Airbender," an adaptation of a sci-fiction animated television series about a clash between four nations which each control one of the elements, fire, water, earth and air.

Filming on the project will start in March in Greenland, Variety magazine said, adding the film would be distributed by Paramount Studios.

Patel, born in Britain to a family of Indian origin, plays the title role in "Slumdog Millionaire," about a young uneducated boy who wins a television quiz show.

10 nominations
The rags-to-riches drama set in Mumbai has won 10 Oscar nominations, including for best picture and best director for Briton Danny Boyle, and has already seized the top prize at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Shyamalan, who also has Indian roots, has a string of successful films to his name, including "Sixth Sense," "The Village" and "Signs."

His more recent films "Lady in the Water," in 2006 and "The Happening," in 2008, were less well received by the critics and bombed at the box-office.
