Sarıgül, who served both within the Republican People’s Party, or CHP, and the DSP as the mayor of Şişli since 1999, has been a divisive figure. He was first elected as the mayor of Şişli in 1999 from the CHP.

The popular mayor then won a second term in the 2004 municipal elections. Seen as the rising star of the CHP, he fell foul of the party’s leadership in 2005 when he challenged CHP leader Deniz Baykal. After he lost a party convention in 2006, he was fired from the party, but courts sided with him.
