The fifth Akbank Short Film Festival will this year be based around the theme "Shorts in Limelight." The festival strives once again to provide film enthusiasts with an varied program and will screen 85 short films from 13 countries when it opens Dec. 15.

This year 324 films applied to the competitive section of the Akbank Short Film Festival. A total of 33 films, comprising 20 fictional films and 13 documentaries, were selected as a result of pre-elimination and will be screened in the "Festival Shorts" section. This section features films produced post-June 2007 and will be screened with English subtitles.

Furthermore, in total, 85 short films will be screened during the festival, including a selection of 52 films in the "Non-Competitive," "Animation Shorts," "Short to Feature" and "Special" categories.

In the "International" section of the festival, films from France, Israel, Estonia, Germany, Greece, the Netherlands, Canada, England, Australia, Sweden, Chile, Austria and Jordan will be screened.

The festival’s category "Short to Feature" has been devoted to Reha Erdem this year. The director continues his foray into cinema by filming both short and feature films.

The section will feature the short works of Erdem, who began his cinematic career in short films, as well as his first feature length film "A Ay" (Oh Moon!). There will also be an opportunity to discuss his films with the director at Akbank Sanat.

After paying homage to the great Suha Arın, Ertuğrul Karslıoğlu and Coşkun Aral, the "Documentary" section of the festival will host acclaimed Turkish director Hakan Aytekin. His films "Keşfin Kıyısında" (On the Edge of Discovery), "Barış Adında Bir Kuş" (A Bird Named Peace) and "Yarına Bir Harf" (A Letter for Tomorrow) will be shown, as well as a variety of animated films from around the world. The director will also be a festival guest at the discussion entitled "About Documentary Film." This year, the festival committee has invited 10 different animated short films, which have won awards at international festivals, to be screened in the "Animation Shorts" section of the Festival. This category features films from Denmark, Spain, Germany and Turkey.

’Dali, Surrealism and Cinema’ in Special Selection

The "Special Selection" of the festival is dedicated to "Dali, Surrealism and Cinema," within which the films "An Andalusian Dog", "Age of Gold" and "The Mystery of Dali" will be screened. Hasan Bülent Kahraman will be participating in a discussion for this category, where he will be scrutinizing 1920s and '30s films that focus on surrealism and will be debating what surrealism means in the world of modern cinema today.

The "Non-Competitive Section" was created in order to screen films regardless of length, genre and country of origin. This year, 57 films applied to be screened in this category, which was created with the aim of offering a free platform, of which eight were selected for screening.

The selection of short films this year hail from France, Israel, Estonia, Germany, Greece, the Netherlands, Canada, the UK, Australia, Sweden, Chile, Austria and Jordan. These works, which have all received awards at leading events such as the Cannes Film Festival, feature in the "International" section.

All screenings in the festival will take place at Akbank Art Center and will be free of charge. The results of the festival's competition will be announced at an award ceremony Dec. 25. The directors of the "Best Fiction" and the "Best Documentary" will be awarded YTL 7,000.
