Shipping traffic on Istanbul's Bosporus Strait has been suspended after a tanker narrowly avoided colliding with land on the European side, the Dogan News Agency reported on Monday. (UPDATED)
The 78-meter Maltese tanker, which was traveling south from the Black Sea, en route to Italy from Bulgaria, began to drift after experiencing engine failure.
Â
The tanker managed to stop just meters from the shoreline of the Istanbul’s affluent Bebek district on the European coast. Â
Â
The tanker has been joined by tugs from the Turkish Coast Guard who will tow the stranded vessel out into open water.Â
