ISTANBUL - The owner of the Gisan Shipyard in Istanbul’s Tuzla district, where three workers died last August when a lifeboat was tested using workers instead of sandbags, is going to run in the upcoming local elections.
Rıdvan Oyar has become a candidate for nomination for the upcoming local elections for the ruling Justice and Development Party, or AKP. Fahri Köse, the head of district organization of the AKP in Abana, a district in the Black Sea province of Kastamonu, last week declared Oyar as a candidate for nomination for the upcoming elections, stating they wanted to run a strong candidate in elections. "He has nothing to do with the accident. [Oyar’s firm] had nothing to do with this," Köse said.
In August, 16 workers were put in a lifeboat to test the weight capabilities of the boat. It was then released from a vessel into the sea but the cords broke and the lifeboat hit the vessel, turning upside down. Oyar failed to respond to the Hürriyet Daily News & Economic Review about his candidacy by the time the Daily News went to press yesterday.
