ISTANBUL - The world economy swelled like a balloon and then burst, according to the president of a leading Turkish company, who spoke at the 6th Leadership Summit in Istanbul yesterday.
"Now we pray for the chance to patch the balloon and blow it up again," said Şarık Tara, honorary president of Enka Holding, which operates in various fields including construction and tourism.
Social responsibilities constitute the top task of a businessperson, Tara also said. Speaking at the summit held by EDUPLUS and TAKTX, Tara stressed the importance of teaching a foreign language to employees, as well as investing in research and development.
"It is important to have 30 to 70 percent of the business abroad in order not to be affected by regional fluctuations."
"Executives need to be guides during the periods of crisis," said İbrahim Arıkan, founding chairman of Arıkanlı Holding. It is the risk that heralds a crisis, he said, emphasizing the importance of taking measures against risk and managing it.
These risks include "decline in sales, budget deficits, negative cash flow, unhappy workers, fall in the production quality and rising client complaints."
Arıkan warned that dismissing workers reduces performance in a workplace because of the tension it creates among the other employees. Revenue-boosting methods should be utilized during crises, he said. "Creating a brand and sustainability constitute top criteria for success," said Mustafa Taviloğlu, chairman of Mudo.
"The crisis has launched a new era, which requires companies to revise their marketing and sales policies," said Hakan Akbaş, president of the Strategy & Business Development Unit of Sabancı Holding. During the summit, the EDUPLUS Leadership Honorary Award of the year was given to Tara, Tavilioğlu and İbrahim Arıkan.
