Shamil Basayev's death shrouded in mystery

The circumstances surrounding the death of Chechen leader Shamil Basayev continue to be shrouded in mystery, as Russian forces claim he was killed in an attack they carried out, while Chechen forces insist Basayev was killed in an accidental explosion.

According a report in the Russian daily Komsomolskaya Pravda, the agent who reportedly placed the bomb which ignited the explosion that killed Basayev under the truck he was riding in was awarded 500 thousand dollars by the government. The same report notes that the plan to kill Basayev had been underway for the past 6 months, and had been put together finally in the Ingushetian city of Nazran. A conflicting report carried in the Russian newspaper Izvestiya asserts that Basayev was the target of an unpiloted plane's bomb attack.
