“The elections in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) resulted in a picture, which will constitute an example depicting to the whole world that the Turkish Cypriot public is mature enough to practice democracy in a perfect manner. In this respect, the winner of the elections, is the whole Turkish Cypriot public. “As for the position of parties, we see that CTP, led by Mehmet Ali Talat, attained a noticeable success… On the other hand DP, under Serdar Denktas, retreated from 13 deputies to 7… These statistical data show that the main direction of the Turkish Cypriot society is evolving towards change… However the choice of people seems to be divided equally between two poles. The result implies a state of “absolute balance” and prevents either party from claiming superiority over the other… The result should not be regarded as a disturbing one for Turkey because, if the government bloc had won the elections, this would have narrowed Turkey’s room for manoeuvre. If the opposition parties had attained the majority, it would have put Denktas in a difficult position, Ankara would have lost control, and the situation would have resulted in a crisis difficult to be managed by Ankara. The state of absolute balance both kept Denktas in his post and warned him. And this picture generated a position for the Justice and Development Party (AKP) government at an equal distance to both sides.”
