ANKARA - The state will not tolerate those who engage in politics about the security forces for political gain, said Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who also said the state is against torture in any form.
The state will not tolerate those who engage in politics about the security forces for political gain, said Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who also said the state is against torture in any form.
Erdoğan was addressing a meeting with the new police chiefs Tuesday in Ankara. He said all security forces have worked in harmony, including the police and soldiers. The coordination and harmony of the security forces have enabled both the prevention of crime and terror activities and their punishment, also strengthening the bond between the people and the state, according to the prime minister.
Erdoğan’s earlier remarks that Turkey’s Police Department is the assurance of the regime triggered a new set of debates recently, leading to a media discussion on whether the security forces or the soldiers, who are usually deemed guardians of the secular regime, are the real assurance of the regime.
Commending the security forces for their contribution to democracy and achievements in human rights, Erdoğan said, "Using the security forces for political reasons and targeting them with undeserved criticism is highly unwelcome and is to be combated."
"Development, security and democracy reinforce each other. The security forces are the base for a prosperous society," he said, adding that he trusted the security forces to fulfill their responsibilities toward the people and ensuring the welfare of the state. Erdoğan also said torture was a crime against humanity and would not be tolerated under any circumstances.
He said torture does not comply with the idea of a modern nation.
