ANKARA - The Democratic Left Party, or DSP, convened at a grand congress Sunday in order to elect its new leader. Including last-minute nominations, the number of candidates for the leadership post increased to 16, though some withdrew from the race before the vote was held.
DSP leader Zeki Sezer announced his resignation from his post after the party’s poll failure in the March local elections. Sezer said he would not change its mind about his resignation or run as a candidate for the party leadership in the congress, but once again he stood for election to the DSP leadership. Sezer, Prof. Alemdar Yalçın and Masum Türker were seen as the strongest candidates in the party election. Ahmet Ağar and Yekta Açıkgöz announced their withdrawals in favor of Sezer.
In the March elections, the DSP drew only get 2.8 percent of the votes. The party’s recent leadership crisis surfaced in a fierce battle between Sezer and the founder of the party, Rahşan Ecevit.
The voting process had not yet concluded when the Hürriyet Daily News & Economic Review went to press yesterday.
