In the southeastern city of Sanliurfa yesterday last night, an estimated 500 people attended a meeting to protest the violence in Diyarbakir and throughout the southeastern region of Turkey. The group gathered in Viransehir's Cumhuriyet Square, where a PKK flag was unfurled, and slogans were shouted in support of imprisoned PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan. Viransehir's mayor, Emrullah Cin, called for calm, and during his speech, gunshots were fired into the air by demonstrators, injuring one policeman present at the protest.
Following the organized protest, attendees dispersed into back streets, breaking windows and damaging storefronts throughout Sanliurfa's Viransehir district.
