ISTANBUL - A 60-megawatt power plant established in Çatalca’s Elbasan district by Sanko Holding began its operations Saturday. The plant consisting of 20 wind turbines has cost Sanko $100 million.
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan participated in the opening ceremony of the Çatalca wind power plant, which will meet electricity demand of 122,000 residences. The annual electricity production of the plant is expected to be 220 million kilowatt per hour. The new plant will create an employment opportunity for 50 people," said Abdulkadir Konukoğlu, Sanko Holding chairman. "Depending on the wind we are expecting the plant to amortize itself within nine to 11 years."
It took five years of wind data analysis, production license and turbine placement for Sanko, a Turkish company with interests in various areas including textile, finance, food and health, to establish the plant in Çatalca. The holding also partnered with Vestas, the largest wind turbine manufacturer in the world with a 28 percent market share. Denizbank and Belgium-based Dexia provided 56.5-million-euro loan, which was used to finance the plant. "Following the Çatalca wind power plant, we are also getting ready to open three hydroelectric power plants within the next 18 months. The plants will generate annual electricity worth 429 megawatts," said Konukoğlu.
