SAMSUN-Samsun Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Yusuf Ziya Yılmaz said Samsun, a city in the Black Sea region, would have a new demonstration and meeting place.
After giving Cumhuriyet Meydanı (Republic Square) a face lift it will not be used for public gatherings anymore but people will have a new place to meet and express their will.
New landscape plan
Yılmaz said the road between the square and Tütün Port is a whole, that’s why the landscape plan will be done considering the present situation.
"We want to clear the terrace above the parking lot at Cumhuriyet Meydanı and we will plan a path from Tütün Port to the Gazi (Veteran Soldier) Museum with a vision that will reflect the national struggle. At the square there will be monuments related to the national struggle, green areas and parks. It will not be a demonstration area anymore. At the same time we know people need a public space for gathering, so we are also planning to create a new area," Yılmaz said.
The demonstration area is planned to be constructed by first refurbishing the space between the Yaşar Doğu Sports Facility and the coast road. Yılmaz said all these urban plans are for the city to take on a more modern identity.
