ISTANBUL - Champion Turkish motorcyclist Kenan Sofuoğlu has signed up to Diyanetspor, the sports club formed by the Directorate of Religious Affairs.
Sofuoğlu, who won the Supersport World Championship in 2007, is the most prominent motorcyclist in Turkish history, despite being only 25, and is now a member of Diyanetspor.
Diyanetspor was formed by the Directorate of Religious Affairs last year, with the purpose of "spreading modern sports' mentality and morale in the country."
Sofuoğlu became the first high-profile sportsperson to be licensed by Diyanetspor. The rider rode to victory in the opening 2009 World Supersport championship race in Australia a week ago.
Contracted to Ten Kate
Sofuoğlu is contracted to the Dutch Hannspree Ten Kate team for the World Supersport Championship. The details of Sofuoğlu’s agreement with Diyanetspor was not announced. Sofuoğlu will remain contracted with the Dutch club in international races, but will be a Diyanetspor rider at a national level.
Ali Bardakoğlu, the head of the Directorate of Religious Affairs, said that they worked with successful sportspeople.
"We are proud of our sportsmen’s success," said Bardakoğlu.
