Rice said the U.S. has confidence in Turkey and Israel, adding her support to Turkey's mediation between Syria and Israel, Rice told reporters on Friday aboard a flight heading to London to meet with members of the Quartet as well as the representatives of Russia, EU and U.N., to discuss Middle east progress after the Annapolis summit, the Anatolian Agency reported. Â
"We have confidence in Turkey and Israel. I think it is clear that we don't have much confidence in Syria. But we have long said the U.S. have no intention of blocking the efforts for peace," she said.
Turkey has been mediating between Syria and Israel to restart peace talks. Israel and Syria's last round of direct talks broke down in 2000 over the details of Israel's proposed withdrawal from the Golan.
Syria has said it received word from Turkey that Israel would be willing to give back the Golan in return for peace with the Arab state. Israel captured the plateau in the 1967 Middle East war and annexed it in 1981 in a move not recognized by the international community.
