ANKARA - A group of students in the Mediterranean city of Antalya protested Monday a decision by a court to release a man that had fired indiscriminately at university students in April last year.

The group calling itself "Anti-Fascist Youth Platform" gathered in front of Antalya’s Akdeniz University and marched to the city’s judicial complex to protest the decision.

Ömer Ulusoy was recorded by news cameras while he was shooting at leftist students on the Akdeniz University campus in April last year. Ulusoy was one of 45 people charged. He was the only person who was remanded in custody during the trial. An Antalya court last Wednesday found him guilty of "attempted murder, firing of a weapon into the air and threatening." The court also decided that Ulusoy had already served 437 days in prison and decided to release him.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Korkmaz Tedik said despite the handing down of prison sentences to minors that throw rocks at the police, Ulusoy who opened fire on students was set free. The group later departed the scene without incident.
