ISTANBUL - Tap water is "going green" with the help of new water recycling technology.
Now tap water, which does not include septic water, can be recycled using various processes through a system that removes "gray water" from usable water. Aktif Grup is responsible for the system and launched a new recycling project called "Aktech Gray Water Recycling Systems." Recycling is profitable, especially in these times of economic crisis and global warming.
The gray water treatment system is already used in the United States, Spain, Italy and Middle Eastern countries. Using the latest technology, the system can save nearly 90 percent of dirty water. Chairman of Aktif Grup Halim Özdemir was attracted to the system when he saw how it worked at an industry fair in Frankfurt.
After Aktif Grup established the Turkish office of German Weise Water Systems the system was brought to Turkey. The tap water running from houses, offices, hotels and student dorms is collected with a special tube line. After special processing, the water can be used in toilet reservoirs, for watering plants and for cleaning.
"With this system, buildings can recycle 40 to 50 percent of their water," Özdemir said. According to Özdemir, once the water is recycled it is hygienic. "We did all the testing and we used the system in our office for six months," Özdemir said. The office used recycled water in an aquarium tank.
"Recycling the water running from kitchen sinks and showers is a cost investment. The system should be used in new buildings and those that are restored or renovated," said Özdemir.
The water recycling system cannot be installed in just one apartment in an apartment or housing complex. "The cost of the installation decreases as the number of apartments using the water system increases. If the system is installed in more than 500 apartments, the installation costs around 200 euros. If it is in stalled in over 1,000 apartments, the cost is decreased to 100 euros. The system recoups the cost in a short period of time," said Özdemir.
